ST. CHARLES AREA WOODCARVERS

June 2004

Club News

Several Club members participated in the O'Fallon Garden Expo and Festival of the Arts on May 1st at the Civic Park in O'Fallon.  The lucky ones were inside the warm, dry building.  The rest of us were outside, under the tent, trying to stay dry.   Soap carving with the kids was very popular and we had a lot of carvers - youth and adult.  Even though it rained all day and the crowd was small, we had a lot of fun.  It was the first opportunity to display our new waterproof banner.  Bartering is still alive - ask Pres. Mitchell about the deals he made for some of his carvings.  Start thinking about the fall festival!

Dave Lincoln will be available on June 5th and 6th to help club members carve faces for their friendship canes.  Contact Dave at or before the June 2nd Club meeting to make arrangements for that weekend.

The Jim Leifield humming bird seminar, scheduled for May 21-23 was cancelled.  Jim had rearranged his schedule, however, too many students had conflicts.  Hopefully Jim will be able to reschedule this seminar in the fall.

O'Fallon is now charging a flat fee of $50 for weekend seminars.  The Club voted to have this fee paid for by the Club as a way to support the seminars and make them more affordable.

Tom Henke displayed a walking stick that he had recently completed.  He offered to host a seminar in August for club members that would be interested.  See a picture of the walking stick below.

The John Englert seminar is scheduled for Nov 19-21, 2004.  The cost is $75 + blanks.  The roster is quickly filling up so if you are interested, contact Pres. Mitchell.

The Club voted to terminate the lease on the storage locker.  The lights, shelves, tarps, ... were sold by silent auction to Club members.  Winning bids were announced at the May 5th meeting and President Mitchell brought the items to the May 19th club meeting for the winners.  The Club will get a check for the unused storage time.

Applications for the 15th Annual Carving Show have been emailed and distributed to members.  The show is scheduled on Sept 18th and 19th at the St. Peters Community and Art Center.  The show is open to all woodcarvers and vendors.  It is presented to provide a public learning experience, to encourage the further pursuit of our art form, and to provide the opportunity for fellowship with fellow woodworkers.  Applications and additional information on the show may be obtained by contacting:  Charles W. Sapp; 771 Meadow Cliff Drive; St. Charles, MO 63303 or calling 636-928-0149 or emailing Charlie at charles@thesapps.com.  Pictures from last years show are on John Bouchillon's web site ,http://www.geocities.com/CapeCanaveral/Runway/8268/wonderwood01/wonderwood.html

Several members have completed their carvings for the friendship cane.  Wyatt displayed several of the carvings on an assembled cane.  See pictures of it below.  Everyone that is participating is asked to bring a completed carving ASAP.  A drawing will be held among the participating members to see who wins the first and subsequent canes.

Don Wilson is looking for one of his books that was loaned out several months ago.  It is a book on lettering and has the complete alphabet and numbers for several fonts.  If found, please return it to Don.

Tip of the Month

Wood bleach will not bleach any areas that have been woodburned.  Thanks to Sheldon (see his bleached mountain goat below.)

How many times have you read a carving book and said “I’ve know that tip for a long time?”  Well here is your chance to share what you have learned with new (and old) club members.  Send me your tip of the month to share.  I will even give you credit for the tip.

Dues are Due

Its time to pay your dues for 2004; $10.  Contact the Membership Chairman, Charles Sapp, or Treasurer Bob Craven.  Club patches are available from Bob Craven for $5.  Unpaid carvers will be carved from the roster.  As long as we have "past members" with unpaid accounts, you will continue to see this reminder.
