Club News
The club is now meeting twice a month - the first and third Wednesdays at 7pm! The "rent fee" has also been rolled back to $1/meeting. Saturday carving is in full swing. However, due to seminar schedules it is best to give Pres. Rich a call to get specific dates. Bring your project and enjoy the companionship and company of other carvers while you work; starting time is 9am.
On October 13 & 14th the club will host an open house show and sell event at the Energy Site. The event will be open to the public so start passing the word to your friends. We plan to post signs on highway 94 to bring in some of the traffic headed to and from the wineries. The event will include a people's choice judging, so plan on bringing your best carving for display. We do not expect to charge a table fee, but you will need to bring a table covering. Show time will be from 9am to 4pm on both days. Please let me know if you are interested in a table so that we can start getting a count. More details will be released in a flyer in the near term.
John Bouchillon has updated our banner with our new location and added the club logo to the banner. Thanks John!. He also has club logo decals for sale, $5. Contact him to place your order. He will also add phrases to the logo (Will carve for food....) for no additional charge.
Shorty Renner passed away on 14 August; please keep the family in your thoughts and prayers.
The Christmas party is scheduled for December 5th. Keep the date open on your calendar and start making that ornament for the exchange.
Missing library tape! Volume 3 of the Chipping Away series with Roger Moore is missing from the library. If you have the tape, please return it to Martha Byron.
Seminars
Corky has arranged several seminars:
* On Sept 8th Bob Bierman will hold a painting seminar at the site. The cost is $15. A supply list is available on the club web site: http://www.stcharlesareawoodcarvers.com/events.php and must be purchased prior to the class. You are to bring a carving that is ready to paint and Bob will work with you on painting techniques.
* On Nov 9 (evening), 10 & 11 Charley Phillips will host a seminar on deep relief flowers on a jar lid. Charley recently was an instructor in Doane for the same project. The instruction is $100 plus the cost of the blank.
* Dallas is taking orders for Wanda Marsh flower blanks. Contact him ASAP if you are interested. Morning glories are $10, hibiscus $20, and day lily $30. These are the same blanks that Dallas used for his flower carving seminar. See the pictures below from Dallas's flower carving seminar.

Getting to Know Our Members
Please join me in welcoming new member Pat Bauman.

Doane Experience 2007
Several club members attended the week of instruction at Doane in late July. There were over 350 carvers plus the instructors. Some of their work is shown below. Doane is a very inexpensive opportunity to be trained by top instructors from all over the country - Dave Stetson, Chris Howard, Sheila Hunter, Gen Kreyling, Pete LeClair, Buck Reinecker, Steve Schumacher, Gerald & Barb Sears, Bob Travis, and many more. Check the Mid-America Woodcarvers web site for more information.
The campus is beautiful with several lakes/ponds, swans, and flowers. Carvers eat in the college cafeteria, stay in the dorms, and attend classes all over the campus. In addition to the scheduled classes during the day (8-5), several instructors offer evening sessions on a variety of topics.

Al Westfall had Dick Carman's class on duck carving.
Al carved a Pied Billed Grebe, a water fowl.
Charles Sapp worked on realistic face carving with Chris Howard.
Typical class room set up. There were 12 carvers in Charlie's class.
His carving is in the foreground.
Al Westfall with his wife June. June was in the basket weaving class.
Don Kley, Lana Bouchillon, and Dale Sapp were also in the basket weaving class
with instructor Buck Reinecker.
George Schuey did relief carving with Nancy Larson.
Dale Sapp gets some one on one instruction from Buck Reinecker.
Pauline and Kai are from the Belleville club.
Larry Keller, Dee Kley, and John Bouchillon carved a pair of mountain bluebirds
with Steve Schumacher.
Jean Keller created decorative gourds with Sara and Larry Cornwell (she is
taking a break here.)
