New Meeting Location - 7295 94 South

Weldon Spring Department of Energy site.  From highway 40/61 or I-70 exit highway 94 and continue south toward Defiance.  It is just past the Francis Howell High School.  When you see a Quonset hut on the right hand side it is facility.

Club News

The club is now meeting twice a month - the first and third Wednesdays at 7pm!   The "rent fee" has also been rolled back to $1/meeting.

Saturday carving will start on May 12th at the Energy site.  Bring your project and enjoy the companionship and company of other carvers while you work.  Starting time has not been decided but 9am is a good guess for when we will get started.  Contact Pres. Rich for more specific information.

A fall show is being considered.  There will not be a charge for tables or admission at the door.  It will be in the Sept/Oct time frame when there is considerable traffic on 94 headed to the wineries.  Signs will be posted on the highway to advertise the event.

The club sharpener is still for sale, $100.     It is the equivalent of the John Burke sharpener that sells for over $300.  Contact Pres Rich Weitzman or John Bouchillon if you are interested in buying it.

Thanks to John Bouchillon for donating a CD on relief carving to the club library.

In addition to the seminars that Corky has currently lined up, Jim Leifeld has stepped forward to teach a class on carving a trout.  The project would be about 3 inches x 4 inches x 12 inches.  The schedule has not been firmed up, but several members at the last meeting indicated that they would be interested.  Contact Corky if you are interested so we can get it scheduled.

Also, if you are interested in a two day bird carving seminary taught by Shorty Renner, contact Corky or Pres. Rich.  The cost would be around $75.  It will be scheduled as soon as we get commitments for the class.

Getting to Know Our Members

Syl Bax completed painting his coffee mug carving.

Corky Breece carved this fellow from a new butternut log in a class with Vic Hood.      The log was so fresh that moisture would fly from the rough out when it was hit with the mallet and gouges.

Martha Byron did a great job on this Santa Claus carving.      We'll be looking for it in the ornament drawing at the Woodcarvers Christmas Ball in December.

Al Westfall carved this brown bear.

  Angel carving by Ray Plodzien.

Pens carved by Dee Kley.  The one on the left is for her Princess (her daughter).

Dallas Bacon brought in one of the morning glories that he had carved.  This will be his class project in June.

Barb Smith    showed a wood burned and painted Santa Claus plate     and a relief carving that she did with Bob Bierman.

Wyatt Sample did this advanced Rufus carving.      Wyatt put in a lot more detail than is typically associated with this pattern.

Bob Berg examines an antique duck decoy that he is to carve a replacement head for.

While working on the Royal Wedding carvings, Wilbert Brewton has been instructing club members on how to carve hands for their carvings.

Seminars

Corky Breece is actively scheduling seminars for the club.  Contact Corky to sign up for the seminars!

He has organized a seminar on April 13, 14, 15 with Bob Bierman.  The project is a relief Santa plate carving.  The cost of the Beerman seminar is $90.  There was one opening left at the last meeting.  Contact Corky ASAP if you are interested.  If you are attending the seminar, please take some pictures for the next newsletter.

On May 18, 19, 20 there is a seminar with Rex and Vickie Branson.  Class members will select one of Rex & Vickie's many rough outs.  The cost of the Branson seminar is $125 + the blank.

On June 9 & 10th club member, Dallas Bacon, will host a seminar on power carving.  The project will be a flower (morning glory, lilly....).  The cost of the Bacon seminar is around $10 to $30 to cover the cost of blanks.

All seminars will be held at the new club site, 7295 94 South.

New Web Site

The new web site is on line!  Thanks to Wyatt Sample for setting it up.  More emphasis will be placed on getting input from club members.  Wyatt will be routing a form so that you can provide information on yourself and provide him with pictures for the site.  Be sure to book mark the new URL - http://www.stcharlesareawoodcarvers.com/ .
