Club News:

The club is now meeting twice a month - the first and third Wednesdays at 7pm!

Charlie Sapp has decided to step down from his duties as Newsletter Editor after a 4 1/2 year reign beginning with the January 2004 Newsletter and ending with the May 2008 Newsletter. He has done a great job and it will be difficult to follow in his footsteps but I will do the best I can.

This initial newsletter is a repeat of his May Newsletter in a new format that I have designed with a couple extras. This is a test run to get the new format in place before the next newsletter. Since I am also the webmaster, I am able to tie the newsletter into the website a little more closely. I hope you like the new format. Please feel free to offer any suggestions.

In Memorial of club members, Doug Woollard and Sheldon White.

(Sheldon is in the blue shirt to the left of Wilbert.)

At the May 21st meeting John Bouchillon instructed club members on carving Santa faces.  The pattern was from the winter edition of Woodcarving Illustrated.  It is hollowed out on the back allowing pierced carving.  Great job, John.  Thanks for having the blanks ready for us and providing the instruction.  I'm sure you will start seeing some of the results in the next edition of the newsletter for show and tell.

The following two links are to sources of carving woods. Heineke comes to the Belleville woodcarving show each year and to other shows and provides excellent wood. Slim also comes to the Belleville show and has also attended our woodcarving shows.

Lynn Doughty is a western carver living in Oklahoma. He does a blog which provides tutorial on how he carves his characters with detailed instruction. There is no cost to the blog. It is a great resource, check it out at Out West Woodcarving. The following pictures are examples of some of the carvings that he gives specific instruction on.
