Club News:

The club meets twice a month - the first and third Wednesdays at 7pm!

At the club meeting on November 5, the club re-elected officers and new board members.

The Annual Christmas banquet is set for December 2. Meat, bread and drinks will be provided. Each member is encouraged to bring a side dish, salad, dessert or other specialty they wish to show off.

We will also hold our annual Christmas carving exchange. Bring a wrapped carved ornament or other small carving and receive one from another member.

Art Council Event: back to table of contents

Members of the Club participated with The Arts Council of St. Charles County in the Lions Club's Oktoberfest at Frontier Park on the St. Charles Riverfront. This year's event was held on September 26 and 27. Club members John Bouchillon, Bill Kuhn, Wyatt Sample and Charlie Sapp all demonstrated their pumpkin carving skills. Club President, Rich Weitzman came out Sunday afternoon to provide moral support. Saturday was cool and interrupted by some heavy rain but Sunday was a perfect day. Frontier Park was teeming with visitors.

The Arts Council sent the club a letter expressing their gratitude for our participation. They also sold enough of the pumpkins that were carved to make the Club a member in good standing for another year. As a member the Club is advertised in their newsletter/flyers, is promoted thru submitted articles, members are contacted to display at multiple art exhibits at the center in Wing Haven, and club members can participate in their art events at reduced fee or sometimes even for no charge (e.g. the recent art happening at Klondike park).

Lana Bouchillon came out to support John Bouchillon, who is sitting back taking a much needed break. Bill Kuhn and Rich Weitzman look at some pictures of their work.

Here are some close-ups of some of the carved pumpkins done in relief style.

Lynn Doughty is a western carver living in Oklahoma. He does a blog which provides tutorial on how he carves his characters with detailed instruction. There is no cost to the blog. It is a great resource, check it out at Out West Woodcarving. The following pictures are examples of some of the carvings that he gives specific instruction on.

Gene Messar is a Flat Plane carver living on the Texas/Louisiana border. He has done a number of videos on youtube demonstrating the carving of santas, snowmen, Rufus and Sadie, hillbilly, wizard, hobo, halloween ghost, a scene with a dog treeing a raccoon in a tree and others. The following is a picture of some of his carvings.

Seminars: back to table of contents

Corky Breece, Seminar Chairman

We held a Bob Bierman Santa seminar in January and a painting seminar in February. In October we had a Jen Kreyling woodburning seminar. Corky has a John Engler seminar scheduled for May 14-16, 2010.

If you have any suggestions for future seminars, just get in touch with Corky and he will look into it and if we can get enough interest he will get it scheduled.

For seminars - the doors generally open in the morning at 8:30am and end in the evening at 5:00pm.  Ask your instructor for exact times.

The club held a woodburning seminar with Jen Kreyling on October 17-18. Members learned a lot and enjoyed themselves. We burned a feather for practice and then did a barn scene and then a woodburning of a mouse with some leaves and acorns.
