St. Charles Area Wood Carvers Participate in the 2009 Doane Experience

(Contributed by Charles Sapp)

The Doane Experience is an annual, weeklong workshop sponsored by the Mid America Woodcarvers Association of Omaha, Nebraska. The workshop is conducted on the campus of Doane College in Crete, Nebraska; a small community in South central Nebraska. It is approximately 75 miles west of Omaha and 25 miles west of Lincoln.

The workshop is conducted on a college campus with classes held in the classroom buildings and students being housed in the dormitories. Meals are served in the college cafeteria.

The curriculum of the workshop includes over 30 classes in a variety of carving subjects and skill levels as well as wood burning, painting, basket making, sculpting, loop weaving, and one a day classes. Nationally know instructors volunteer their time for the week to promote the various forms of art. This year the workshop had over 300 students.

Eleven members of the St. Charles Area Wood Carvers participated in the Doane Experience: John & Lana Bouchillon, Larry & Jean Keller, Charles & Dale Sapp, Don & Dee Kley, Al & June Westfall, and George Schuey.
